‘Subphylum’ – Music Video

I made a video for my song ‘Subphylum’ off my upcoming tape (if it ever gets finished, money and time are the enemy). This song is about my struggles with anxiety and depression. Last year my bedroom in the shared house I live in became infested with some kind of insect that was biting me in my sleep. I paid 100 euro to have my room fumigated, my landlady decided it wasn’t her concern, even though the bugs were coming in through an extra vent which was behind my bed.

I went through a phase of having nightmares about the creatures crawling all over my skin, being in my hair, my mouth or in my bed. I would be so tired from the night terrors and lack of sleep that I started hallucinating that the insects were everywhere, in my food, on me, crawling over my hands and feet. At times I felt like I was going crazy. This song is about this period in my life. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks, as always, for listening.

Alien She LIVE at 74 Francis Street

Here are some photographs of Alien She, my band playing on the 5th of March at Lucy’s Lounge (74 Francis Street). This gig was so much fun. Intimate shows like this mean so much to me. I love sharing my songs with strangers and feeling how strong that connection is when I can make people dance and move with my guitar and voice. It really is a very meaningful way of communicating for me, as someone who struggles to be eloquently verbal. I’m so grateful to my bandmates and friends for sharing the experience with me. Onwards and upwards. She is alive. We record vocals on our album this week. Can’t wait to get it finished.

Katie O’Neill – Artist in Residence, Draoicht

I’m very pleased to announce I will be the artist in residence in Draiocht, Blanchardstown from July-December 2016. I’m so grateful to have been given this opportunity and am really looking forward to making some new work in such a great facility. Here is the text from the brochure:

“Katie O’Neill is a multidisciplinary artist from Balbriggan, Dublin. O’Neill’s practice is largely defined by self-publishing in various media, notably zines (small, self-made booklets) and books of political and personal themes, including ‘Loudmouth’, a collaborative feminist zine which called for submissions from women detailing their experiences of sexism. Her work has explored themes of alienation within capitalist spaces, psychogeography (an approach to geography that emphasizes playfulness and ‘drifting’ around urban environments), mental health struggles and notions of identity, memory and ‘medium as message’. For the past months O’Neill has collected sounds and images from various areas in her native Dublin city and abroad. Working as a collector and curator of this archive of found ‘footage’, the artist creates audio collages and visual narratives of various themes, playing with and adding to what she finds. O’Neill’s goal for her residency at Draíocht is to develop this project by bringing together various strands of her work in a way that is engaging and accessible to her audience. O’Neill’s work ‘Eternal Light’ was exhibited in Draíocht in 2014. The work was also displayed in Tactic in Cork. O’Neill has a BA in Photography from DIT and studied screen-printing in Black Church Print Studio under the guidance of Louise Peat.”
